Traumatic Stress reactions to serious illness, pain, frightening and/or invasive medical procedures can cause significant physiological and psychological problems in daily functioning for children and their parents/caregivers. Significant problems can include re-experiencing the events and/or feelings of emotional distress associated with the events(s). Psychological symptoms can also include avoidance and hyper-arousal. These may manifest as irritability, detachment, withdrawal, hyper-vigilance, and trouble concentrating or sleeping. New somatic complains of headaches and bellyaches may so be symptomatic of this type of stress reaction.

Children of divorce may experience an extreme sense of grief and loss. The negative effects of divorce on children may include an array of emotional, psychological, physiological, and academic problems that can significantly impair their daily functioning. If their parents are in hostile conflict with each other, the children may develop symptoms that are more pervasive and severe. Children who experience this level of stress have developed conditions such adjustment disorders, anxiety disorders, and depressive disorders.
